Hey there, eufy community! It’s Ralph again, your friendly “Ethical Hacker.” This week, I want to share some easy ways you can customize your home security system to keep an extra eye on senior citizens and children.

  • Install security cameras to monitor areas where children play and where seniors spend most of their time. Make sure to position your cameras at all points of entry --- front door, back door, your door to the garage, etc., as well as cameras in your front yard and backyard. You should be able to use your smartphone, tablet and/or laptop to keep an eye on movement coming and going from your property.
  • Make sure your doors and windows have entry sensors with audible alarms to alert you when they are opened. This helps keep children from wandering outside unsupervised and alerts you if a stranger or intruder attempts to enter your home.
  • Use smart locks with access codes that can be easily changed and managed. This allows caregivers and your family to get inside without needing a physical key, including in emergency situations. Set up notifications to be alerted when the door is unlocked, whether it’s a child coming home from school or a senior leaving the house without giving notice.
  • Consider wearable medical alert devices for seniors that can detect falls and allow for emergency calls if they can’t get to the phone. Some systems also offer GPS tracking for seniors who may become lost due to conditions like Alzheimer's or dementia.
  • Use home automation devices to control lighting, thermostats, and other appliances. Automated lighting can help prevent falls at night and keep the home well-lit to ward off intruders.

The monitoring needs of children and seniors will depend a lot on their ages, abilities, and health conditions. It's important to look at the specific needs of your family members and adjust your home security system to fit your situation.
