Key Differences Between Local Storage and Cloud Storage

Hi everybody. It's your friendly "ethical hacker" here with my latest set of simple tips and knowledge focused on home security. When it comes to do-it-yourself (DIY) home security systems, one of the biggest choices consumers need to make is whether to utilize local storage and cloud storage for their video and audio data.

eufy offers both options to their customers to give people the power to build the security system that fits their personal needs best. Most eufy home security devices default to local storage, but it's also easy to choose cloud storage options from their website at eufy.com. Let's look at some of the major differences between local storage and cloud storage to help decide which option might be right for you.

Local Storage: Data is stored on physical devices within the home, such as hard drives, DVRs (Digital Video Recorders), or NVRs (Network Video Recorders). These devices are typically connected to the home security cameras or systems directly.

Cloud Storage: Data is stored on remote servers operated by a cloud service provider. These servers are accessed over the internet.

Data Accessibility:

Local Storage: Access to data is generally limited to the physical location of the storage device, although some systems allow remote access via a local network or the internet.

Cloud Storage: Data can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, offering greater flexibility for monitoring and reviewing footage.

Data Capacity:

Local Storage: The storage capacity is limited to the size of the physical hard drives or memory cards. Expanding storage often requires purchasing additional or larger hardware.

Cloud Storage: Many cloud services offer scalable storage options, allowing users to increase their storage capacity as needed, often through subscription models.

Cost:

Local Storage: There is an upfront cost for purchasing security cameras, smart locks, doorbells, sensors, data hubs, etc., but there are typically no ongoing fees unless you choose to upgrade or expand your storage hardware and/or memory capacity.

Cloud Storage: Often operates on a subscription model, requiring monthly or annual fees for the service. The cost can increase with higher storage needs or additional features.

Data Security:

Local Storage: The security of the data depends on physical security measures and network security if remote access is enabled. Data is not exposed to third-party cloud service providers, reducing the risk of data breaches through those services.

Cloud Storage: Data security relies on the cloud service provider's security measures. While providers often implement robust security protocols, the data is potentially vulnerable to hacking, service outages, or provider-side issues.

Data Backup and Redundancy:

Local Storage: Users are responsible for creating backups to prevent data loss due to hardware failure, theft, or damage. This often requires additional hardware or manual transfer to other media.

Cloud Storage: Cloud providers typically have redundant systems in place to ensure data is backed up and can be recovered in case of hardware failure.

Ease of Use:

Local Storage: May require more technical knowledge to set up and maintain, including managing physical hardware and network configurations.

Cloud Storage: Often user-friendly with easy setup and maintenance, as the cloud provider helps manage the technical aspects of the storage infrastructure.

Data Ownership and Privacy:

Local Storage: Data ownership remains with the user, and privacy is maintained as long as the physical and network security is not compromised.

Cloud Storage: Users must trust the cloud provider with their data, and there may be concerns about data privacy, including vulnerability to government surveillance or subpoenas.

When choosing between local and cloud storage for home security, it's important to consider factors such as the importance of remote accessibility, the desired level of control over the data, budget constraints, and the level of trust in third-party providers. Each homeowner's and/or small business owner's decision will be influenced by their specific needs and priorities.

In my next post (scheduled to go live on June 3), we'll look at some simple home security gift ideas for dear old dad just in time for Father's Day. Thanks for reading!
